Political activist Calvince Okoth, popularly known as Gaucho, has moved to dismiss claims that he is profiting from his seat on the Mama Lucy Nairobi Hospital board, saying the financial returns are small.
According to Gaucho, board members earn sitting allowances only when meetings actually take place. Each session pays between KSh 4,000 and KSh 5,000.
With the board sitting roughly twice a month, he estimates his monthly earnings from the role at between KSh 8,000 and KSh 10,000.
He went further, saying the expenses he incurs while carrying out his duties often exceed what he takes home. In his view, the position is better understood as public service than as a source of income.
The clarification comes after his appointment drew scrutiny, with critics questioning both his qualifications and whether the role was a financial windfall.
By putting figures on the table, Gaucho sought to shift the conversation from personal gain to the responsibilities he says he is shouldering.
