An Eldoret couple has warmed hearts across the country after sharing the extraordinary story of how a simple mistake—sending KSh 50 worth of airtime to the wrong phone number—blossomed into a 15-year love story.

In April 2009, Ibrahim Maina, then a young vendor working in Eldoret town, was in the middle of a busy workday when he attempted to transfer airtime to a client. In his rush, he mixed up a few digits and unknowingly sent the KSh 50 to a stranger—a woman who would one day become his wife.

That woman was Janet Waithera, who still remembers the moment she received the unexpected airtime. Curious and slightly puzzled, she sent a message to thank the sender, triggering the first of many conversations that would soon follow. What started as a brief exchange out of politeness quickly turned into daily chats filled with humour, shared dreams and growing affection.

But their connection faced its first emotional challenge when the two finally met in person. Janet admitted she was shocked to discover that Ibrahim was a person living with a disability—a revelation she hadn’t anticipated. Yet, instead of retreating, she chose to embrace the person behind the voice she had come to cherish.

Fifteen years later, the couple look back with gratitude and wonder at how a tiny error led to a lifetime of companionship. Their story, shared joyfully with NTV, has become a symbol of unexpected blessings, resilience and the beautiful unpredictability of love.

Today, Ibrahim and Janet stand as living proof that destiny sometimes arrives disguised as a mistake—and that even KSh 50 can rewrite the course of two lives forever.
