Murang’a Governor Irungu Kangata has sparked fresh political debate after shifting focus from defending the government to blaming Kenyans for repeatedly electing corrupt leaders since independence.

The unexpected turn has left many wondering whether the governor is slowly stepping away from President William Ruto’s camp.

In a clip that has gone viral on Facebook here, Kangata suggested that the problem lies not just with those in State House but also with citizens who consistently vote in leaders facing corruption questions. His remarks have unsettled political allies who once counted him among Ruto’s strongest defenders.

Kangata’s comments come at a time when discontent is rising in Mt Kenya, where several leaders allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claim the region has been sidelined.

By directing blame toward voters, the Murang’a boss has effectively distanced himself from shielding the government, instead putting responsibility back on the electorate.

Analysts see the move as a possible recalibration ahead of 2027, where shifting alliances are already in play. His message reflects the frustrations bubbling on the ground, with residents openly complaining about the high cost of living and unmet promises from the Kenya Kwanza administration.

For a politician who championed Ruto’s hustler narrative in 2022, this apparent change of tune has raised questions about loyalty within the coalition.

If Kangata’s approach gains traction, more Mt Kenya leaders could use it as cover to criticize the President without directly breaking ranks.
