A video of a Kenyan woman driving at an extremely high speed has caused concern online.
The video, shared by TikTok user @monicahmugo869, shows her calmly driving a manual Toyota Fielder at 160 kilometres per hour. Monica, a muguka transporter and mother of three, filmed herself on a public road, effortlessly shifting gears while the speedometer kept rising.
This has sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans on social media. Some praised her driving skills, but many feared for her safety and the lives of other road users.
The speed limit on most highways in Kenya is 80km/h. However, miraa and muguka vehicles are often seen travelling much faster. Their drivers usually rush to deliver the perishable products, and many of the cars are modified for speed and road grip.
One user, Festo, commented, “First I saw 160 and got scared. Then I saw it’s a manual car and feared even more.” Another added, “Any mistake at that speed, and you’ll end up on a T-shirt.”
Others begged her to slow down. Brian Mushaukwa said, “People who don’t work in hospitals are brave. I’ve seen too much to ever go beyond 100.”
While the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is yet to issue a statement, the incident raises questions about road safety and the risks taken by muguka transporters.
In a separate case, another woman named Lydiah is also making headlines — but for different reasons. She drives a manual commercial truck and has safely delivered goods across the country for two years without an accident.
Both stories show the growing role of women in male-dominated transport sectors. But Monica’s video has reminded many that speed thrills — and it can also kill.
