The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is known as one of the most professional and disciplined armies across the globeThis is evidenced by the several peace-keeping missions it has participated in and continues to indulge in around the world.

From Liberia to Kosovo and missions in Somalia to the Democratic Republic of Congo, the KDF has proven its capabilities again and again.General (Rtd) Joseph Raymond Kibwana, EGH, CBS is a prominent Kenyan military figure and public servant.He was born in 1946 in Kilifi County, Kenya Coastal region.

Kibwana had a distinguished career in the Kenya Armed Forces, rising through the ranks as a naval officer. He trained at institutions including the Britannia Royal Naval College (UK), Faraday House Engineering College (UK), the US Naval Staff College, and the US Naval War College.

He was the first Navy officer to lead the KDF as Chief of General Staff thanks to the Tonje Rules. He served at the helm for four years, from 2000 to 2005.

Kibwana joined the Kenya Navy in 1964 and was commissioned as a Lieutenant on January 1, 1967.

He served in various senior ranks in the Kenya Navy and was also Chief of Military Intelligence from 1982 to 1985.In May 1998, he became Lieutenant General and took over as the Commandant of Kenya’s National Defence College.

Besides being commissioner he is married and with a family, Marwa has always kept his private life just that, private.

Before his promotion as the regional coordinator in 2016, Marwa had been the Mombasa County Commissioner for six years during which time he fought against drug dealers and terror threats, when even the police abandoned him and “only God, the President and my family supported me in the fight against terrorism, but I soldiered on,” Marwa told The Nairobian

Nelson Marwa’s legacy is that of a fearless, results-oriented security enforcer who prioritized national interests and law enforcement over political popularity. While praised for decisive action against crime and terror, he remains polarizing due to his confrontational style and high-profile rivalries with regional leaders.

He has no widely documented direct connection to Tanzanian politics or figures like John Magufuli former Tanzanian president, though his upbringing included time in Tanzania.
