This week, heavy rainfall across Nairobi and surrounding counties has led to severe disruptions, with many communities grappling with flooding, property damage, and displacement. Overflowing rivers and blocked drainage channels have caused significant issues in various locations, leaving residents and authorities scrambling to manage the situation.
Along the Ruai Bypass, motorists and pedestrians encountered hazardous conditions on Tuesday as floodwaters quickly submerged parts of the road, causing long traffic jams and halting movement for hours. Witnesses report that some individuals attempting to cross the flooded sections of the road were swept away, prompting search and rescue efforts by both emergency teams and locals.
In other parts of Nairobi, including estates such as Utawala, Parklands, Roysambu, and Juja, residents reported flooded homes and impassable roads, severely disrupting transport and daily activities. The impact of the flooding has also extended beyond the capital, with several regions experiencing significant damage.
Meanwhile, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) confirmed the temporary closure of a section of the Iten-Kabarnet Road due to a landslide near Kolol, further hampering movement in the area.
Meteorological forecasts predict continued rainfall over the coming days, affecting several counties, including Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kakamega, and Mombasa. Officials have urged residents in flood-prone areas to exercise caution as the situation develops.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has also warned of a 58 to 61 percent likelihood of El Niño conditions developing between June and December 2026, which could lead to even heavier rainfall later in the year.
Authorities are advising residents in low-lying and informal settlements to remain vigilant as rising water levels continue to strain drainage systems. Disaster response teams are actively monitoring the situation, while local administrations are working to provide relief to displaced families.
Officials have emphasized the importance of improving urban planning and drainage maintenance to mitigate the impact of heavy rains in the future.
