Kenya is expected to experience above-normal rainfall in several parts of the country during October, with the Kenya Meteorological Department warning of heavy rainfall events in some areas.

The latest weather outlook indicates that coastal counties, including Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi and Lamu, are among areas with a higher likelihood of receiving above-average rainfall. Parts of Taita Taveta, Tana River, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera are also expected to record enhanced rainfall.

Several counties in Central, Eastern and Nairobi regions are also on the forecast list. These include Nairobi, Makueni, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Isiolo, Nyandarua and Nyeri.

Western and Rift Valley counties are also expected to receive near-average to above-average rainfall. They include Kisumu, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Kisii, Homa Bay, Migori, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Uasin Gishu, Vihiga, Siaya, Trans Nzoia and West Pokot.

The increased rainfall comes as Kenya enters the October-November-December short-rains season. The weather agency has warned that some areas could experience intense rainfall, raising the possibility of flash floods, riverine flooding, landslides and disruptions to transport.

Residents living in flood-prone and low-lying areas have been urged to remain alert and follow official weather updates. Motorists have also been advised to exercise caution, particularly where roads and drainage systems could be affected by heavy downpours.
