The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a fresh heavy rainfall advisory warning residents in several parts of the country to prepare for possible flooding as wet conditions continue to intensify.
According to the latest update, rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres within a 24-hour period is expected in multiple regions, raising the likelihood of flash floods, swollen rivers, and disrupted transport networks. The department has cautioned that the situation may worsen in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
The advisory covers counties across the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands both east and west of the Rift Valley, parts of the Coast region, and sections of Northeastern Kenya. Authorities further warned that even areas not directly experiencing heavy downpours could still be affected due to downstream flooding from rivers and water catchments.
In addition to flooding risks, the weather agency highlighted concerns over poor visibility, strong winds, and lightning strikes. Motorists have been urged to exercise caution on the roads, while residents are advised to avoid crossing flooded areas, as water depth and currents can be misleading and dangerous.
The Kenya Meteorological Department also cautioned against seeking shelter under trees or metallic structures during storms due to the risk of lightning-related injuries. Air travel and outdoor activities may also face disruptions depending on how the weather pattern develops in the coming days.
County disaster management teams and national response agencies have reportedly been alerted to remain on standby in case of emergencies. Residents are encouraged to follow official weather updates and act quickly on safety advisories as conditions evolve.
Public awareness remains critical as the country continues to experience shifting weather patterns. Communities in affected regions are being urged to stay vigilant, take precautionary measures, and prioritize safety to reduce the risk of loss of life and property.
