Victor Otieno’s life was cut short in the most painful way, leaving his family, friends, and Kenyans heartbroken.

Victor, a 24-year-old college student from Thika, had joined thousands of young people in the Gen-Z-led protests on June 25, 2025. The demonstrations, which turned deadly in several towns, were aimed at pushing the government to address issues affecting ordinary citizens.

Moments before tragedy struck, Victor was full of life. A viral video making rounds online shows him along Thika Road, smiling and chanting slogans with fellow protesters. Dressed in a purple jersey, baseball cap, and a face mask, he looked energetic and hopeful, unaware that these would be his final moments.

Sadly, shortly after that video was taken, Victor was allegedly shot dead during the chaos that broke out. Witnesses claim the police opened fire to disperse the demonstrators, leading to injuries and loss of life.

News of Victor’s death has sparked outrage and grief across social media. His family confirmed his passing, with one relative posting an emotional tribute on Facebook, expressing how devastated they were to lose such a young and promising soul.

Many have condemned the excessive use of force by security officers, calling for justice for Victor and all others who died or were injured during the protests.

As Kenyans mourn Victor Otieno, his smiling face in that purple jersey has become a painful reminder of the cost of fighting for change. May his soul rest in peace.
