Renowned activist Boniface Mwangi has been found alive in Ukunda, Kwale County, after vanishing mysteriously in Tanzania earlier this week.
According to his family and legal team, Mwangi was discovered abandoned and in a disoriented state, triggering both relief and alarm over his ordeal.
According to the lawyer, Mwangi was abandoned in Ukunda, Kwale County, which is approximately 92 kilometres north of the Tanzanian border at Lunga Lunga. The activist was deported by road from Dar es Salaam.
His lawyer, James Kamau has said that the family plans to airlift him to Nairobi for specialised treatment.
“He looked weak, shaken, and confused. We immediately rushed him to a local hospital for urgent medical evaluation.”
He added, “We intend to airlift him to Nairobi, but he needs urgent medical care, which we will seek here in Ukunda before the flight.”
Family members say Mwangi was found dumped along a street in Ukunda late Wednesday night and was unable to speak coherently about where he had been held or how he ended up in Kenya.
Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi also confirmed the activist’s return, stating, “Boniface Mwangi has been located and is receiving medical attention. The government is monitoring the situation closely.”
While Mwangi is now safe, questions linger over the circumstances of his disappearance, the involvement of Tanzanian authorities, and whether his detention was politically motivated. His family is calling for an independent investigation.
“We’re grateful he’s alive, but this nightmare isn’t over,” a family spokesperson said. “We want answers, and we want justice.”
Mwangi’s case has sparked international outrage, with human rights groups demanding accountability from both Tanzanian and Kenyan governments.
