What began as a life-changing opportunity to settle in the United States has turned into a major legal battle for Francis Smith Mogambi, a Kenyan national accused of participating in a massive fraud scheme targeting American student loan programmes.
Mogambi secured his chance to live in the United States after emerging successful in the 2024 Diversity Visa Lottery, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery. Thousands of people compete for the opportunity every year, hoping to secure permanent residency and access to better opportunities in America.
His selection was followed by a series of immigration security procedures, including fingerprinting, police clearances and extensive background investigations. After completing the requirements, Mogambi was granted permanent residency and relocated to the United States.
However, his new life in America has taken an unexpected turn following allegations linking him to a criminal network accused of stealing millions of dollars from a government-backed student financial assistance programme.
US prosecutors allege that Mogambi was part of a sophisticated operation that harvested the personal information of American citizens and used their identities to fraudulently obtain student loans. The alleged scheme is estimated to have cost the United States approximately $200 million, equivalent to Sh25.8 billion.
The allegations have placed the Kenyan national under intense scrutiny. He has been arrested and is awaiting prosecution in the United States, where investigators are pursuing individuals suspected of participating in the operation.
The investigation is also extending beyond American borders, with Kenyan and US authorities reportedly working together to identify other suspected accomplices. Several Kenyans could face arrest and extradition to America to answer questions about their alleged involvement.
The case presents another challenge in the fight against international financial crimes, particularly schemes that exploit stolen identities and digital financial systems.
For Mogambi, the American residency he secured through a competitive immigration programme has been overshadowed by allegations that could carry serious legal consequences if proven in court.
