Former Kirinyaga Woman Representative Purity Ngirici has reportedly been removed as Chairperson of the Kenya Seed Company Board following her political realignment, which saw her distance herself from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The development has sparked debate in political circles, coming at a time when realignments within Kenya’s ruling coalition continue to shape appointments in key parastatals and state corporations. Ngirici was appointed to lead the Kenya Seed Company board in 2023, a role that placed her at the centre of one of the country’s most important agricultural institutions, responsible for seed production and distribution to farmers across Kenya.

Recent reports indicate that her exit is linked to shifting political loyalties, after she publicly distanced herself from UDA and aligned herself with emerging opposition-linked movements. Her move has been interpreted by some political observers as part of a broader wave of defections and reconfigurations ahead of future elections.

Although official communication from the government or the Ministry of Agriculture has not fully detailed the reasons behind the board changes, sources within the sector suggest that political considerations may have influenced the decision.

The Kenya Seed Company plays a key role in supporting Kenya’s agriculture sector, especially at a time when the government is pushing for food security and increased farmer productivity. Any leadership changes at the institution are therefore closely watched by stakeholders in the farming community.

Ngirici, who previously served as Kirinyaga Woman Representative, has been known for her outspoken political style and shifting alliances, which have kept her at the centre of Mt Kenya politics.

The reported removal has already triggered mixed reactions online, with supporters calling it politically motivated, while critics argue it reflects the normal restructuring of parastatal leadership.

As the situation develops, attention now turns to whether an official gazette notice will confirm the board changes and who will take over leadership of the Kenya Seed Company moving forward.
