MP Kururia had taken to Facebook to rally public participation in selecting a deserving gospel figure, narrowing the choice down to two respected artists Philip Kimani and Dr. Sarah K. He stated that the award was meant to recognize a gospel musician who is born again, morally upright, scandal-free, and not driven by commercial interests.

“We had proposed to appreciate a true gospel singer who is fully born again, preaches the gospel with righteousness, and has not been involved in scandals. Someone who hasn’t commercialised their gift, doesn’t take alcohol, or engage in immorality,” Kururia said.

While Kimani garnered massive support from fans, he chose to decline the offer, expressing that the love and recognition from the public were more than enough for him.

Following his decision, fellow nominee Dr. Sarah K echoed similar sentiments, urging that the money be channeled toward someone in genuine need. “The One Million support needs to go to a deserving needy person,” said the Uniinue hitmaker.

The initiative, which had in the past supported personalities like Dada Sarah and comedian Henry Desagu during difficult times, was intended to uplift individuals positively impacting society. According to sources, the funds were pooled together by the MP in collaboration with fellow leaders and business partners.

In his Facebook post, MP Kururia tagged various prominent figures, including singer Samidoh, Hon. Anne Muratha, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, gospel artist Karangu Muraya, and Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a, suggesting the weight the award carried.

Kimani’s response was widely praised on social media, with many lauding his humility and unwavering principles. MP Kururia later acknowledged the artists’ stance, admitting that the category might not have been appropriate.

“The category we chose was wrong. I agree with you,u the One Million support needs to go to a truly deserving needy person,” he posted in response.

Netizens shared mixed reactions, with many recommending more impactful uses for the funds. “In your constituency, needy students are struggling to stay in school. Take ten of them and give each KSh100,000, you’ll have transformed their lives,” one comment read.

Others commended Kimani’s character, calling him a role model and a true embodiment of Christian values. “Your character and persona are way above these shenanigans. Wise move, big brother,” said one user. “A true definition of real Christianity. You are a role model to many,” another added.
