County Government of Homa Bay has officially named streets in Homa Bay Town in preparation for the National Devolution Conference scheduled for August 12–15, 2025.

A public participation process was launched in April at the direction of Governor Gladys Wanga.

 

She really encouraged the Homabay residents to suggest street names that reflect the county’s culture, history and notable contributors .

Some of the Named Streets currently in Homabay Include;Governor Gladys Wanga Street, Orwa Ojode Street and Ong’ondo Were Street (honoring the late Kasipul MP)

Walter Opiyo, leader of Bunge la Wenye Nchi, praised the move as a way to assist navigation and help newcomers find their way more easily .

Geoffrey Okoth, from the Homa Bay Giant Traders Association, said the street signs would improve logistics and aid delivery of goods to businesses .

Michael Kojo, executive director of the Asego Public Litigation Forum, expressed dissatisfaction with the street names being politically oriented. He felt the initiative overlooked non‑politicians who have made substantial contributions to the county .

Homa Bay County’s street-naming initiative is a symbolic and practical effort tied to the upcoming Devolution Conference. While many residents appreciate the presumed benefits for public navigation and commerce, critics question the political focus of naming choices, noting the omission of non‑political figures.
