The tragic death of eight-year-old Jennifer Michelle Achieng has sparked public outrage and raised serious concerns about justice and accountability in Kenya’s education system.

Jennifer, a pupil at New View Academy in Kayole, Nairobi, allegedly died after being assaulted by her teacher for failing to answer a question correctly.

Witnesses claim that pupils who saw the incident were each given Ksh 30, an apparent attempt to silence them. This alleged bribery has fueled suspicions of a cover-up by the school administration, deepening the pain of Jennifer’s family and angering the wider community.

In response to the incident, human rights activist and founder of the Usikimye Organization Njeri wa Migwi, led protests demanding justice for the young girl.

However, her efforts were met with resistance. Njeri was arrested, taken to court, and reportedly harassed by authorities.

Amid growing calls for accountability, it was reported that Jennifer’s mother was quietly offered employment, a move critics claim was meant to suppress the family’s pursuit of justice. Meanwhile, Njeri’s legal case was dropped without explanation.

Adding to the controversy, the school has since rebranded and continues to operate in the same neighborhood under a new name.

Despite these developments, human rights defenders continue to demand answers. They are calling for thorough investigations, legal action against those responsible, and stronger protections for children in schools.
