Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba’s announcement that she had repented for dishonoring President William Ruto has triggered a wave of backlash and mockery online, with many Kenyans questioning the sincerity and timing of her statement.
The legislator’s lengthy post, in which she described seeking forgiveness from the President and from God, instead drew sharp criticism from a section of social media users who dismissed it as politically motivated.
Some commenters questioned the very premise of her repentance, arguing that telling the truth about a leader cannot be equated to sin, with one user suggesting she had simply lost her way politically.
Others took a more cynical view of Kenyan politics altogether, arguing that there is nothing resembling dishonor when it comes to political alignment, with shifting loyalties being the norm rather than the exception, especially given the current wave of political realignments ahead of 2027.
A significant portion of the backlash focused on the timing of her statement, with several users pointing out that only a few months remain before a major political event, urging her to simply see out her term rather than perform what they viewed as a calculated reconciliation.
Others mocked the reference to President Ruto as “the King,” with some sarcastically asking which king she meant, drawing comparisons to mocking nicknames previously used against the Head of State.
A number of commenters also invoked the popular “Wantam” hashtag, a phrase widely used by critics of the administration to insist that President Ruto will serve only one term, with some declaring that no amount of repentance or time spent in church would change that political outcome.
Others referenced cultural beliefs around curses from elders, suggesting that consequences for past actions would still take effect regardless of any reconciliation.
The reactions highlight the deep skepticism among sections of the public toward political U-turns, particularly among leaders who previously positioned themselves firmly within opposition ranks before realigning with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
