Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna shocked fellow lawmakers on Thursday when he abruptly walked out of a Senate session after fiercely defending former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a heated debate, Sifuna stunned many by declaring, “Gachagua was right,” in reference to the former Deputy President’s recent remarks about government neglect and regional imbalance.
Sifuna, known for his sharp criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration, caught both allies and opponents off guard with his unexpected defense.
“Whether we like it or not, Gachagua spoke the truth. Some regions are being sidelined, and it’s time we face that reality,” Sifuna said before dramatically exiting the chambers.
His statement came during a session debating national development equity, where tempers flared over allegations that some counties were receiving more government attention than others.
The Senate was momentarily thrown into confusion as lawmakers attempted to process Sifuna’s words and his uncharacteristic walkout.
Some senators accused him of playing politics, while others expressed support for his boldness.
Sifuna later addressed the media outside Parliament, saying his actions were driven by frustration over the Senate’s failure to address issues of regional fairness honestly.
“I may not agree with Gachagua on many things, but on this, he spoke the truth. Let’s stop pretending,” he said.
His move has sparked intense debate on social media, with some hailing his honesty and others questioning his motives.
As political temperatures rise, Sifuna’s dramatic stance is likely to fuel further discussions on equity and leadership within the government.
