Since his return from the United States, DCP party leader and presidential hopeful Rigathi Gachagua has not been holding joint rallies with his fellow heavyweights in the United Opposition team.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with a local daily, Navaisha MP Jane Kihara, a staunch Gachagua insider, shed light on why the team is no-longer holding joint rallies as of now.
As revealed by the lawmaker, the United Opposition members have resorted to cementing their strongholds individually before they embark on joint rallies later in the near future.
Cementing the regions where they enjoy the most following will ensure that the opposition chiefs have a solid base and campaign launchpad before hitting the road for joint rallies across the country
“At some point, we shall converge for joint rallies. But for now, the most important thing is for leaders to cement their foothold in areas they enjoy following,” the lawmaker said.
When Gachagua arrived from abroad, the opposition team mulled touring Matiang’i’s Kisii backyard. However, the joint opposition rallies that were meant to start on 8th September never took off.
Jane Kihara’s explanation is perhaps the reason why the Kisii joint rallies were put off the table.
Gachagua is currently hitting the road alone with the support of a few lawmakers and party secretary general Cleophas Malala.
Observers have noted a change in his approach to campaigns. Gachagua has now began articulating some of the items in his manifesto, he didn’t do this initially.
The other opposition chiefs including Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, Justin Muturi and George Natembeya have slowed down on campaigns. Muturi and Wamalwa have immersed themselves in planning for the coming mini polls.
