US Prison

The extraordinary story of Jeffrey Sila Ndungi ended in a US federal prison after his multi-million shilling cybercrime empire collapsed.

The former Alliance High School genius and University of Nairobi engineering graduate once lived an enviable lifestyle in Nairobi’s South B. At just 23, Ndungi owned two aircraft parked at Wilson Airport, alongside high-end luxury cars like a Cadillac Escalade and a Range Rover Sport.

However, beneath his glamorous life lay a dark secret. Operating from cyber cafés along Mombasa Road, Ndungi hacked US tax systems using stolen identities to claim millions in fraudulent refunds. His insatiable greed eventually led to his undoing when he fell into an elaborate sting operation set up by undercover US agents.

In 2016, believing he was meeting a corrupt buyer, Ndungi flew to Dallas, Texas, to sell a stolen US Treasury check worth over KSh 7.6 million. FBI agents ambushed and arrested him at Los Angeles International Airport as he desperately tried to board a flight back to Nairobi.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with authorities seizing his luxury vehicles and freezing millions in his bank accounts.
