A Kenyan commercial pilot says he owns nothing after a 34-year marriage ended in a bitter court fight, and he is now appealing for help to pay his legal fees.
Captain Waweru Mwangi, a father of five, told TUKO.co.ke that his wife allegedly claims the family home and a school they started together belong to her alone.
He alleges that the documents were moved into her name as far back as 2014 without his knowledge. The matter is currently before the courts.
Waweru said he spent years flying and sending his earnings to an account his wife managed.
He also allegedly took out a loan that the couple used to start the school, which she ran.
According to him, the marriage began to strain around 2016, especially when he was between contracts.
The turning point came when the security guard at their Kileleshwa home called to ask whether he had sent anyone to collect items from the house.
Waweru said he left his lunch in Dagoretti and rushed back, only to find movers loading the family’s belongings onto a lorry.
He alleges his wife had directed their children to help with the move.
He said she stayed silent when he confronted her, and he believes he would have been left with nothing had he arrived later.
The two then drew up separate lists of what each would take. Days later, a man delivered divorce papers to his Muthaiga residence, along with allegations he says he never expected.
The couple briefly reconciled after Waweru donated a kidney to their son, but tensions returned over the position of a water pipe, and police were called.
He says his children have been led to believe he contributed little to the family. Waweru said he is not ashamed to ask for support with the legal costs. His wife’s side of the story was not available.
