Former Interior CS and 2027 presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i has responded to NTV’s exposé “Murder Tapes: The Butchers of Nakuru” which implicates police in the execution of four men.
The documentary shows the victims were handcuffed and shot, with police later falsely claiming they were armed gangsters. Matiang’i, then Interior CS, was shown supporting the police, saying: “We will deploy unprecedented fire and force.”
However, in a statement dated May 16, 2025, the Team Matiang’i Secretariat argued his comments were taken out of context.
They emphasized Matiang’i’s commitment to human rights and cited his reform achievements in security, education, and public service. The statement acknowledged ongoing IPOA investigations and urged respect for due process.
The Secretariat criticized politically charged journalism ahead of 2027, urging media to uphold truth and avoid sensationalism. While recognizing media’s watchdog role, they warned against becoming tools of propaganda, stressing that journalistic credibility and democratic stability must be preserved.
