Kenya is mourning the death of former Cabinet Minister and veteran diplomat Burudi Nabwera, who served as the country’s first ambassador to the United States. He died on Friday, October 9, 2026, at the age of 99.

Nabwera’s death was announced by Co-operatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, who paid tribute to the veteran leader, describing him as a distinguished public servant who dedicated his life to serving the country.

In his condolence message, Oparanya highlighted Nabwera’s contribution to Kenya’s diplomatic relations, governance and national development, noting that his service would remain part of the country’s history.

Nabwera made history shortly after Kenya gained independence when he became the country’s first ambassador to the United States. He also served as Kenya’s first Permanent Representative to the United Nations, representing the country during its early years on the international stage.

His diplomatic career placed him among the officials who helped establish Kenya’s presence in international affairs following independence.

Beyond diplomacy, Nabwera held several senior positions in government. He served as Minister of State in the Office of the President and was also associated with the Kenya African National Union (KANU), where he served as secretary-general.

Nabwera later ventured into elective politics, becoming the first Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency following its creation in 1988. He represented the constituency in the National Assembly and remained a notable figure in the region’s political history.

Former Cabinet Minister Eliud Owalo also mourned Nabwera, recalling their professional interactions in 2008 when he served as a consultant during the development of Nzoia Sugar Company’s strategic plan. Nabwera was then the company’s board chairman.

Owalo described his contribution to the institution as invaluable, adding to the tributes following his passing.

Nabwera’s death marks the end of a long public service career spanning diplomacy, government leadership and elective politics. Condolences continue to reach his family, friends and the people of Lugari.
