Police in Kapsabet have uncovered a suspected fake currency syndicate, arresting five individuals linked to the illegal operation. The crackdown followed intelligence reports pointing to suspicious activities in the Kapsambacha area within Kapsabet Township.
The operation was carried out at around 6:30pm, when officers raided a single rented room believed to be the base of the illicit activities. Upon entry, four suspects were found inside, while authorities continue efforts to trace a fifth accomplice.
Investigators say the suspects were caught in the act of preparing materials believed to be counterfeit Kenyan currency. Several imitation notes were discovered spread across a table, with a whitish powder being applied during the process.
Police also recovered two bottles containing a colorless liquid and a syringe, items suspected to have been used in the production of the fake notes. The scene was processed and all materials secured as evidence.
The arrested individuals, aged between 35 and 42 years, including one adult whose age was not disclosed, were taken to Kapsabet Police Station. They are currently being held pending further investigations and possible charges.
Authorities confirmed that KSh 120,000 in suspected fake KSh 1,000 notes was recovered during the raid. The cash, alongside other materials, has been preserved as exhibits to support the ongoing probe.
Nandi Central OCPD Maurice Okul confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing. He assured residents that firm action will be taken against those found responsible for the illegal operation.
Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, warning that counterfeit currency undermines the economy and exposes unsuspecting traders and residents to financial losses.
