Though he retired from the military while in the rank of a two-star general, former Director of Military Science Major General ( Rtd ) Philip Wachira Kameru was once one of the most powerful security chiefs in the country.
Major General ( Rtd ) Kameru rose through the Kenya Army ranks to become one of the most powerful, rising to become the Director of Military Intelligence ( DMI ).
In 2015, Major General ( Rtd ) Kameru was appointed by the then President Uhuru Kenyatta as the new director of the National Intelligence Service ( NIS ) to replace Major General ( Rtd ) Michael Gichangi, who resigned after eight years in office.
Major General ( Rtd ) Kameru would go on to serve in the powerful position for next over seven years before finally bowing out with months left to the end of his mandate. He was succeeded by former Director of Public Prosecutions, Noordin Haji in 2023.
Two years since his exit from the high office, the former spy master has kept a low public profile even as he adjusts to new life in retirement.
