Kenyan comedian and activist Eric Omondi has intervened to rescue a young boy who had allegedly been locked inside a cage for several years in Nkubu, Meru County.

The disturbing case emerged after images and videos of the boy circulated on social media, triggering widespread outrage and calls for urgent intervention from leaders and child rights advocates.

Reports indicate that the boy had been confined in a cage like structure for approximately seven years. The structure resembled an animal enclosure, raising serious concerns about child abuse, neglect, and violation of basic human rights.

The matter attracted the attention of Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, who publicly condemned the act and termed it inhumane. He stressed that no child should be subjected to such treatment under any circumstances.

Following the public outcry, Eric Omondi stepped in and confirmed that the boy had been successfully rescued. In a statement shared on his official social media platforms, the comedian said the child had been removed from the cage and taken to a safe location.

Omondi revealed that the boy would undergo a full medical assessment, treatment, and professional therapy to address both physical and psychological effects resulting from the prolonged confinement.

He further stated that plans were underway to support the child’s long-term recovery. This includes ensuring access to proper healthcare and a safe living environment.

In addition to medical support, Eric Omondi announced plans to build a decent house for the boy and his grandmother, who has been his primary caregiver, to help restore their dignity and improve their living conditions.

The incident sparked widespread reactions online, with many Kenyans expressing shock, anger, and sympathy for the child. Child welfare advocates have reiterated that children, including those with special needs or behavioral challenges, deserve care, medical attention, and compassion rather than isolation.

Calls have also been made for authorities to investigate how the boy remained confined for years without intervention and to ensure accountability where necessary.

The case has renewed discussions on child protection, community responsibility, and the need for stronger support systems to safeguard vulnerable children across the country.
