Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has weighed in on the growing political divisions within the Mt. Kenya region, declaring that leaders should stop worrying about maintaining unity if different political interests can no longer coexist. His remarks come as debate over the region’s political direction continues to intensify ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a public event, Njuki said there is nothing wrong with the region taking different political paths if that reflects the wishes of its people. He argued that political differences should not be viewed as a crisis, adding that every community has the right to make independent decisions based on its priorities and interests.
The governor emphasized that leaders and residents from the Mt. Kenya East region have already made up their minds and will continue supporting President William Ruto. According to Njuki, their political position is based on development priorities and the belief that working with the current administration offers the best opportunity to advance the region’s interests.
He dismissed concerns that a split within the wider Mt. Kenya voting bloc would weaken the region’s influence, insisting that democracy allows people to support different leaders without creating hostility. Njuki maintained that political loyalty should be determined by performance and shared goals rather than pressure to follow a single regional position.
His comments come at a time when political realignments continue to reshape alliances across the country, with several leaders taking different positions on the future of the region. The debate has intensified following increased competition between supporters of President Ruto and leaders who have aligned themselves with the opposition.
