Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on Tuesday visited the Shakahola forest, where the exercise to exhume bodies of suspected starvation cult members has resumed. CS Kithure stated that the government would use all available resources to determine what had occurred at Shakahola. He referred to the “Shakahola massacre” as one of the worst tragedies in Kenyan history, in which it is estimated that over 109 people perished, some from starvation and others from asphyxiation, believing they would be meeting Jesus.
Kithure revealed that there is still a long way to go as security agencies comb the vast forest linked to controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie.To augment the ground teams that are combing the forest with sniffer dogs, CS Kithure stated that, while the use of aircraft in search and rescue will be limited, security agencies will use drones, which have already proven useful.
