The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has long been a battleground for various armed groups, but recent developments have introduced a disturbing new dimension.

Ugandan Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has reportedly launched a brutal campaign targeting witchdoctors, whom he claims are affiliated with the Cooperative for the Development of the Congo (CODECO), a notorious armed militia operating in the Ituri province.

In a series of alarming social media posts, Muhoozi announced the public execution of witchdoctors, stating that they would be given a chance to convert to Christianity—if they refused, they would be killed.

This shocking declaration raises critical concerns about Uganda’s role in the DRC conflict, human rights violations, and the unchecked power wielded by Muhoozi, the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

Muhoozi’s actions go beyond military operations; they reflect a dangerous mix of religious extremism and political militarization. His claim that he is acting on divine orders to protect the “Bachwezi” people—an ancient Ugandan dynasty—suggests a broader ideological motivation.

Additionally, his threats against Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine further demonstrate his growing autocratic tendencies.

The international community cannot ignore these developments. Extrajudicial executions violate international law, and Muhoozi’s statements about eliminating Uganda’s enemies in the DRC only escalate tensions in an already fragile region.

If left unchecked, this approach could lead to increased violence, mass displacements, and further instability in Central Africa.
