Residents of Umoja Estate in Nairobi were left in shock and fear on Monday evening after a newly married man stabbed his wife to death in a fit of rage.

The man, only identified as a 32-year-old mechanic, is said to have discovered that his wife, whom he married just weeks ago in a colourful and well-attended wedding, had kept a dark secret from him — she had a grown-up child with another man before their marriage.

According to neighbours, the couple had appeared happy since their wedding which took place just last month. However, the calm turned into chaos when the man allegedly found out about the child through a mutual friend who visited their home over the weekend.

“He was very disturbed after learning the truth. He felt betrayed because she had never mentioned the child, not even once during courtship or before marriage,” said a neighbour who requested anonymity.

On Monday evening, loud screams were heard from the couple’s rented house. Neighbours rushed to the scene only to find the woman lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds. The man was still holding a kitchen knife, looking confused and motionless.

Efforts to save the woman’s life were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead at Mama Lucy Hospital where she had been rushed by good Samaritans.

Police from Buruburu Police Station arrived shortly after and arrested the suspect without resistance. The murder weapon was also recovered at the scene.

“We are treating this as a case of murder. The suspect is in our custody as investigations continue. He will be arraigned in court once we complete our investigations,” said a police officer who spoke at the scene.

The woman’s body was taken to the City Mortuary for a post-mortem. Family members are still in disbelief and are calling for justice.

This tragic incident has sparked fresh conversations online and offline about honesty in relationships and the consequences of secrets within marriage.
