A dramatic exchange between a Nairobi driver and a woman alleged to be a beggar has set social media abuzz after residents of Githurai captured the incident on camera.
In the viral video, the man is seen confronting the woman for persistently asking him for shopping items, accusing her of exploiting people’s kindness despite receiving help in the past.
The visibly irritated driver can be heard questioning why the woman repeatedly seeks groceries—mainly flour—from him. He reminded her that he had already bought her unga before, yet she continued to demand more instead of showing appreciation.
Expressing disappointment, the man criticized what he called the “culture of dependency,” where able-bodied people rely on begging rather than working. He warned that such behavior discourages others from assisting those in genuine need.
“This has become too common—some people treat begging as a full-time job instead of finding work,” he remarked during the altercation.
The incident has triggered divided opinions online. While some social media users agreed with the driver’s concerns, others felt he handled the matter insensitively by confronting and filming the woman in public.
According to Githurai residents, the woman is a familiar face, known for frequently asking motorists and pedestrians for food or money. Some locals confirmed that she often requests unga even after being helped previously.
Others, however, defended her, saying that poverty and joblessness leave many with no choice but to beg. They urged the public to respond with empathy, as not all struggles are visible.
The video concludes with the embarrassed woman quietly walking away, while the driver remains by his car, visibly upset by the encounter.
