Police in Kisumu Central Sub-county have arrested Kibuye Market chairlady Judith Matengo, widely known as Nyaramba, after a shocking video emerged showing her brutally assaulting two female traders with a wooden rod.

The dramatic arrest took place on Monday night, with officers locating Matengo hiding within the market premises shortly after the disturbing footage ignited widespread public outrage.

The victims, Mercy Okoth and Rozette Adhiambo, have both recorded statements with authorities, detailing the harrowing experience that left them shaken and injured.

According to a police report, the women suffered soft-tissue injuries during the broad-daylight assault, which was captured by fellow traders and quickly circulated online, prompting calls for swift justice.

Following the attack, the two traders sought treatment at Lumumba Sub-county Hospital, where they received medical attention.

Investigators say they are still piecing together the events leading up to the confrontation, noting that the motive behind the assault remains unclear. However, officers believe the chairlady may not have acted alone.

Police have confirmed they are pursuing additional suspects believed to have taken part in the incident or aided in the attack.

The viral nature of the video has intensified public pressure on authorities, with community members and market traders demanding accountability and condemning the violence witnessed in one of Kisumu’s busiest markets.

Matengo is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday, where she will face charges related to the assault.

The arrest marks a significant development in a case that has not only drawn national attention but also raised questions about leadership, safety, and conflict resolution within major market spaces.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing as they work to ensure justice for the victims and restore calm within the Kibuye Market community.
