Rangwe Member of Parliament Lillian Gogo was visibly overwhelmed with emotion at Opoda Farm in Bondo, where mourners gathered to honor the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Her grief was compounded by a personal tragedy after her home in Kotieno Village, Homa Bay County, was razed down by fire early Saturday morning.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred under unclear circumstances while the legislator and her family were away.

Villagers who rushed to help were unable to contain the raging flames, which spread rapidly, reducing property worth millions of shillings to ashes. Though the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, some residents suspect it could have been an act of arson.

The heartbreaking incident struck as the nation continues to mourn the passing of Raila, who died on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. Gogo, an ODM-elected MP, has long been a close ally of the veteran opposition leader and has often credited him for shaping her political path.

Just a day before the fire, she attended the public viewing of Raila’s body at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi and at Parliament Buildings, where she broke down in tears while recalling his immense contribution to the nation and her career.

Currently, the body lies in state at the Mamboleo Stadium in Kisumu for public viewing before being transported to his Bondo home in Siaya County. His final burial is scheduled for Sunday, October 19.
