At the recent launch of Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni brought a moment of levity to the event with a humorous remark.
The event, held at State House Nairobi, was a significant occasion attended by several key figures, including Presidents Samia Suluhu of Tanzania, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, and Salva Kiir of South Sudan. Former Presidents Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania and Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, as well as Burundi’s Prime Minister Gervais Ndirakobuca, were also present.
As President Museveni took the podium to speak, he began sharing various stories to emphasize his points. One story was about Africa’s strength through unity. However, as he veered off the main topic, Museveni humorously acknowledged his digression.
He jokingly told the audience, “I’m sorry for diverting; it was you who invited me. If you don’t want to hear my stories, don’t invite me anywhere.” This light-hearted comment sparked laughter among the guests and added a touch of humor to the formal event.
Museveni’s comment reminded everyone of the warmth and personal touch he brings to his speeches, even in serious settings.
The event itself marked an important step in Raila Odinga’s campaign for the AUC role, and Museveni’s playful remark was a memorable highlight.
