Kenyan entertainer DJ Pierra Makena has opened up about her approach to single motherhood, explaining why she would not take her daughter’s father to court to compel him to provide child support.
Speaking during an interview on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Makena said she values a father’s emotional connection with his child more than financial support, arguing that love, affection and parental presence cannot be forced through legal action.
Her remarks have reignited interest in her personal journey as a single mother raising her daughter, Ricca Pokot, while balancing her entertainment career and parenting responsibilities.
“Being a single mother for me is very different from the way people perceive it to be. I wouldn’t take a man to court for child support. But if I were to take a man to court to force him to love a child, then I’d do that. For me, it’s more of an emotional connection than financial,” she said.
The DJ previously revealed that her relationship with her daughter’s father ended before she discovered she was pregnant. She said she informed him about the pregnancy after their separation, but he subsequently distanced himself from her and the unborn child.
In a 2023 interview with YouTuber Eve Mungai, Makena disclosed that the man married another woman when she was five months pregnant. She described the experience as painful, saying she initially struggled to accept the situation but eventually found a way to move forward with her life.
“We were good together, but after we split and I found out I was pregnant, he disappeared. He wasn’t rude or mean about it, but five months later, he was saying ‘I do’ to someone else,” she said in the interview.
Makena also clarified that the man was not married when they were dating, addressing speculation that had circulated about their relationship. She has consistently chosen not to publicly identify him, explaining that he has since established his own family and that she respects his privacy.
Makena previously disclosed that her daughter’s father once expressed interest in becoming more involved in the child’s life. However, she said she later became concerned about his intentions and did not want Ricca to experience emotional disappointment.
She maintained that while he remains the child’s biological father, any renewed involvement should come with genuine commitment to parenting.
The entertainer has also spoken about the challenges of balancing her career with raising her daughter, particularly because her work as a DJ sometimes requires her to perform at night. She said being a single parent demands sacrifices, but she remains focused on providing her daughter with a stable upbringing.
Her latest comments have highlighted the distinction between financial provision and emotional involvement in a child’s upbringing. While financial support can help meet everyday needs, her remarks emphasise the importance she places on affection, attention and a consistent parental presence.
However, her personal decision does not mean that child maintenance is unimportant. Financial support remains a practical part of meeting a child’s needs, while Kenyan law recognises parental responsibilities and the child’s right to care and protection.
For Makena, the central issue is the kind of relationship her daughter has with her father, rather than using legal action to compel financial contributions. Her experience reflects the challenges some single parents face as they navigate parenting, relationships and the responsibility of protecting their children’s emotional well-being.
