Lyta

Popular Kenyan DJ Lyta has revealed the emotional reasons behind his decision to stop producing his once viral “Hot Grabba” mixes, which dominated matatu culture and youth entertainment for years.

Speaking in a candid reflection, the entertainer said he intentionally stepped back from the mixes after realising that some of the content and videos circulating within them were not appropriate and could negatively influence young listeners. He noted that as his platform grew, so did the responsibility that came with it.

“Sometimes I ask God for forgiveness, because I was young and I didn’t know what I was doing,” DJ Lyta said.

He further expressed concern that his work may have contributed to poor academic performance among some students, adding that he has even heard claims that certain learners failed their KCSE exams due to constant exposure to his mixes.

The DJ admitted that the popularity of the Hot Grabba series came with unintended consequences, especially among school-going youths who consumed the mixes widely in matatus, parties, and online platforms.

While the mixes earned him fame and a strong fanbase across Kenya and beyond, he now says he feels a sense of responsibility to shift direction.

DJ Lyta’s statement has sparked mixed reactions among fans, with some praising his honesty and maturity, while others argue that music consumption is a matter of personal discipline.

Despite stepping back from the controversial mixes, the DJ continues to remain active in the entertainment scene, producing alternative sets that he describes as more positive and suitable for all audiences.

His remarks add to ongoing conversations in Kenya’s entertainment industry about the influence of DJs and digital content creators on young people and the need for responsible content creation.
