Githunguri Member of Parliament, Gathoni Wamuchomba, has made a bold proposal to significantly reduce the salaries of MPs from one million to four hundred thousand shillings, inclusive of allowances. Taking to her official X account (formerly known as Twitter), Wamuchomba stated, “It is high time we propose MPs wage cut from 1 million to 400,000 (inclusive of allowances.) This is the conversation we now need to have. Who says NO?”
This proposal comes on the heels of President Ruto’s recent call for budget cuts across various sectors, including the executive branch, in an effort to raise funds that were initially intended to be sourced from the rejected finance bill. Wamuchomba’s stance underscores a growing sentiment among some legislators to share in the fiscal adjustments needed to address the country’s financial challenges.
