A fierce gun battle between armed bandits and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers on Monday evening left at least four bandits dead in a deadly encounter that lasted several hours. The clash happened in the troubled North Rift region, an area that has remained a hotspot for cattle rustling and armed attacks for years.

According to local security sources, the heavily armed bandits had raided a nearby village, stealing livestock and shooting in the air to scare residents. KDF officers who were on patrol responded quickly, leading to a heavy exchange of fire that sent villagers running for safety. The officers managed to corner the attackers, killing four of them on the spot while others escaped with injuries.

The KDF officers recovered several rifles, ammunition, and stolen livestock after the shootout. Bodies of the slain bandits were taken to a nearby mortuary as investigations into the incident continue. No KDF officer was reported injured during the operation.

Residents who spoke to the press expressed fear but praised the officers for their quick response, saying the attackers had been terrorizing villages and stealing livestock for weeks without fear. “These criminals have been troubling us for a long time. We are happy the soldiers acted fast,” said one villager.

Security teams have since intensified patrols in the region to prevent revenge attacks and ensure peace is restored. Local leaders have also urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing information that can help trace the remaining attackers.

North Rift has in recent months witnessed renewed cases of banditry despite several government operations aimed at ending the menace. The government has vowed to continue with the disarmament exercise until all illegal guns are recovered and lasting peace is achieved in the region.

The latest incident serves as another reminder of the deep security challenges facing the area, where innocent lives and property continue to be lost due to armed violence and cattle raids. Authorities have promised that more military operations will follow to flush out the remaining bandits hiding in the vast terrain.
