A daring daylight robbery unfolded in Nairobi’s Central Business District on Friday, leaving a businessman counting losses after being robbed of Sh7 million.
The victim had just withdrawn the cash from a bank along Mama Ngina Street and was walking toward a forex bureau on Koinange Street. It was around 9:47 am when a gang of about 12 men ambushed him.
Security footage shows the group running toward him, causing chaos. In the confusion, one of the gang members snatched the money and jumped onto a waiting van that sped off.
Others fled on foot as the shocked businessman raised the alarm. Unfortunately, the attackers overpowered him in a nearby alley.
Police believe the gang had been tipped off and may have trailed him from the bank.
They suspect an inside job and have begun investigations, with officers visiting both the scene and the bank involved.
According to officers, this isn’t an isolated case. Just last week, another man was robbed of Sh307,000 in Kitengela by suspects posing as police officers.
In Machakos Town, a separate case was reported where a man lost nearly Sh1 million shortly after leaving a bank. No suspects have been arrested in either incident.
Detectives suspect some bank staff could be colluding with criminals by leaking information about large cash withdrawals. In other cases, criminals are believed to monitor bank activities while pretending to be customers.
The latest incident highlights growing concern over rising insecurity targeting people leaving banks with large sums of money.
Police urge the public to consider safer options such as using digital transfers and to remain vigilant when handling cash.
Investigations into the Nairobi CBD robbery are ongoing, with hopes of tracking down the suspects and recovering the stolen funds.
