A 48-year-old pastor has been arrested in Chakama, located in Malindi sub-county, Kilifi County, over claims that his church was involved in cult-like activities.
Authorities took action after receiving reports that raised concerns about what was happening inside the church. Police say the church has now been closed to allow investigations to continue.
The arrest happened just days after a similar case in Migori County. There, police shut down another church and arrested 57 members over suspicions of being part of a cult.
The situation in Migori became more serious when two bodies were found buried in a shallow grave near the church. This discovery led to a full investigation and the closure of the place of worship.
According to the police in Kilifi, they acted quickly to avoid another dangerous situation. They are now questioning the arrested pastor to understand more about what was going on inside the church.
Officers are also speaking to members of the church and neighbors to collect information. Local leaders say it is important to stop any group that misleads or harms people under the name of religion.
Over the past few years, there has been growing concern in Kenya about churches that do not follow proper religious practices and instead operate as secretive groups.
Some of these groups have been accused of brainwashing members, taking their money, and encouraging harmful behavior.
The government has said it will continue to monitor and investigate churches that show signs of being unsafe or illegal. Community members are also being asked to report any suspicious activities in their area.
