Tragedy struck Lamu County when three students drowned while swimming in the Indian Ocean at Shela Beach. The incident occurred on Sunday, April 13, when a group of over twenty students from Hongwe, Mpeketoni, was taken to the beach by their teacher after attending a church service.

Reports indicate that the students ventured into the water, where they encountered difficulties, leading to the unfortunate drowning of three of their peers. The Kenya Coast Guard, alongside the Red Cross and local county officers, responded promptly to the emergency, successfully recovering two of the bodies.

However, one student remains missing, prompting ongoing search efforts. This heartbreaking event has cast a shadow over the community, highlighting the importance of water safety, especially for young swimmers. As families mourn the loss of their loved ones, the incident serves as a somber reminder of the potential dangers associated with swimming in open waters.
