Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has rejected joining Kalonzo Musyoka’s Ukombozi Alliance, saying it wants to strengthen its own political structures before entering a wider coalition.
The position comes as opposition parties continue to reorganise ahead of the 2027 General Election. Kalonzo launched the Ukombozi Alliance after the rebranding of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala said the party would instead work with the Linda Mwananchi movement before considering a broader agreement with other opposition parties.
Malala said DCP and the Sifuna-led movement could later negotiate with parties in the Ukombozi Alliance on a wider coalition arrangement.
The party has also explained that it wants to first assess its support across the country before committing itself to another political formation.
DCP Advisory Council Chairperson Maina Kamanda said the party needs to strengthen its grassroots structures in all 47 counties. He argued that the party should first understand the level of support it has before deciding how to enter coalition talks.
Kamanda also said DCP recognises several opposition figures, including Gachagua, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and Kalonzo.
Gachagua had earlier indicated that his party was focused on building its support base before engaging in coalition negotiations. The latest position from DCP is therefore consistent with that approach.
Kalonzo’s Ukombozi Alliance, meanwhile, has been presented as a new opposition platform ahead of the 2027 election. The alliance has indicated that it is open to working with other political groups.
The developments come as opposition leaders continue holding meetings and making fresh political arrangements across the country.
For now, DCP remains outside the Ukombozi Alliance, with its leaders saying future coalition talks could still take place after the party strengthens its structures and evaluates its position.
The latest move adds to the ongoing discussions over how Kenya’s opposition will organise itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.
