Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been ordered to forfeit assets worth Ksh131 million as part of a case targeting his alleged Ksh1.9 billion ‘tainted’ wealth.

The court ruling, made on Friday, December 19, represents a significant decision in the ongoing battle over the politician’s wealth.

Waititu, along with his wife Susan Ndung’u, had initially been facing the possibility of forfeiting properties valued at over Ksh1.9 billion, which prosecutors claim were fraudulently acquired.

However, the recent ruling came as a reprieve for the couple, as they were instructed to surrender only a portion of these assets.

The seized assets include two plots of land, each valued at Ksh16 million, totaling Ksh32 million.

In addition, the court has confiscated a Caterpillar tractor used for construction, worth Ksh11 million, along with two vehicles, each valued at Ksh600,000.

These assets are now to be handed over to the State as part of the broader effort to recover ill-gotten wealth linked to Waititu’s controversial tenure as Kiambu’s governor.

This ruling follows an investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), which has been working to expose and recover corruptly acquired wealth from public officials.

Waititu had been accused of embezzling public funds through irregular contracts during his time in office.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with many questioning the extent of corruption among politicians and the effectiveness of the legal system in addressing such issues.

While this is a partial victory for the State, the full implications of the case are still unfolding, and many are watching closely to see whether more assets will be forfeited in future rulings.

As the legal process continues, this ruling marks an important step in the ongoing fight against corruption in Kenya.
