This phenomenon occurs when the sun stays above the horizon for prolonged periods, resulting in a near absence of darkness. The duration and intensity of this unique daylight shift depending on the latitude of the area.
Norway is one of the most famous places to witness the midnight sun. Communities situated above the Arctic Circle enjoy continuous daylight for part of the summer, earning Norway the title of “Land of the Midnight Sun.” The country’s stunning fjords, mountains, and Arctic scenery offer a dramatic backdrop for this spectacular event.
Sweden also experiences the midnight sun, particularly in its northern areas. As visitors journey closer to the Arctic Circle, the duration of daylight increases significantly. Some northern parts of Sweden can enjoy weeks where the sun never fully sets.
In Finland, especially in the Lapland region, summer days can last exceptionally long. Areas positioned near or above the Arctic Circle can experience weeks of uninterrupted sunshine, leading to bright nights and unusual summer atmospheres.
Denmark is connected to the midnight sun through Greenland, one of its territories. Northern Greenland sees the sun visible for 24 hours during specific summer periods. However, mainland Denmark is too far south to witness the true midnight sun.
Russia also provides chances to observe this phenomenon in regions north of the Arctic Circle. For instance, Murmansk undergoes an extended period of continuous daylight in the summer, making it one of the northern cities where the effects of the midnight sun are particularly evident.
The occurrence of the midnight sun is due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis. During summer in the Northern Hemisphere, the North Pole is tilted towards the sun, allowing areas within the Arctic Circle to stay illuminated rather than experiencing a conventional sunset.
