Parliament has officially stepped in to dispel widespread rumors circulating on social media regarding the alleged appointment of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and KANU Chairman Gideon Moi to President William Ruto’s Cabinet.
The clarification follows a flurry of online posts and speculative reports claiming that the two prominent politicians were poised to join the Cabinet in what was described as a “unity reshuffle.”
In a statement released on Friday, the Senate Majority Office dismissed the reports as completely unfounded and misleading.
Lawmakers clarified that there has been no formal communication from the Executive to Parliament regarding any changes or new appointments to the Cabinet.
“The reports suggesting that Edwin Sifuna and Gideon Moi have been nominated to the Cabinet are false and should be treated as speculation,” the statement read. “As of now, the President has not submitted any names for vetting or approval.”
The rumors had sparked intense debate among Kenyans online, with many speculating that the alleged appointments signaled a growing political realignment ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Some social media users claimed that the move was part of President Ruto’s broader strategy to build a ‘broad-based government’ by bringing in opposition figures, a narrative that has gained traction in recent months.
However, Parliament’s clarification appears to have put those rumors to rest, at least for now.
Officials emphasized that any Cabinet reshuffle or new appointment must follow due constitutional process, including formal communication from the President and vetting by the relevant parliamentary committees.
Political analysts believe the viral claims were likely fueled by recent political gestures between leaders across the divide, as well as ongoing discussions about inclusivity and national unity.
“In Kenya’s political landscape, such rumors tend to spread quickly, especially when there’s public frustration or anticipation of change,” said one political commentator.
Neither Edwin Sifuna nor Gideon Moi has issued an official statement regarding the matter, though sources close to both leaders have privately dismissed the reports as baseless.
Sifuna, who also serves as ODM Secretary-General, has been one of the most vocal critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration, while Moi has maintained a cautious but observant approach to national politics since his party’s performance in the last election.
Parliament concluded its statement by urging the public to verify information before sharing it online and to rely only on official communication channels for government-related announcements.
The clarification now aims to restore calm amid a political environment often driven by speculation and misinformation.
