Mary

Comedian and activist Eric Omondi has made a heartfelt plea to Kenyans to come to the aid of a once-celebrated star Marya, the voice behind the 2010 hit Chokoza, who is now fighting for her life after suffering a stroke.

In an emotional video shared on his Instagram page, Eric revealed that Marya is currently bedridden and urgently in need of funds for medical treatment and rehabilitation. He described her condition as dire, saying, “We have watched legends fall and only celebrated them in death. Let’s not wait for Marya to be another statistic.”

Marya, who rose to fame with her sultry voice and captivating presence in Kenya’s urban music scene, has been off the radar for years. According to Eric, she had quietly been struggling with her health until the stroke struck, leaving her partially paralyzed and unable to care for herself.

Eric, who has become known for leading fundraising campaigns for distressed Kenyans, has urged his followers to send whatever they can. “She gave us joy, now let’s give her hope,” he said. He also promised full transparency on the use of donations.

The online response has been swift, with Kenyans expressing shock and sympathy under the hashtag #SupportMarya. Photos and videos of the singer in a hospital bed have further stirred emotions, especially among fans who grew up listening to her music.

As of now, contributions can be sent to Paybill number 891300, account name MARYA.

“This is our sister. She entertained us when she had the strength—now it’s our turn,” Eric concluded.

Whether Kenya will rise to the occasion, only time will tell. But for Marya, every minute—and every coin counts.
