Charles Were’s bodyguard and driver are now among the murder suspects being held by police. Detectives arrested the two after their statements on the killing of the Kasipul Member of Parliament were found to be inconsistent.
They had both escaped the shooting without injuries, which raised suspicions among investigators. The gunman had opened fire at close range in traffic, killing the MP on the spot.
The police say the bodyguard and driver gave different accounts of the incident when questioned. They were taken to help reconstruct the MP’s movements before the attack but their narratives did not match.
Charles Were was shot five times near City Mortuary in broad daylight. An autopsy revealed that the bullets damaged key organs, leading to his death.
Witnesses said the bodyguard briefly chased the shooter before returning to the car to take the injured MP to Nairobi Hospital. The shooter had escaped using a motorcycle waiting nearby.
The officers handling the case now consider the bodyguard and driver as possible accomplices. Their behaviour and statements did not align with other evidence from the scene.
Investigators are also examining CCTV footage that tracked suspects trailing the MP before the attack. One man captured on video was seen with a bag believed to have carried the murder weapon.
Several other suspects have been arrested, including people linked to previous crimes in Nairobi and Kiambu. Among them is a police officer believed to have played a major role in the plot.
Police raided homes in Kayole and Pangani where they recovered police gear, phones and a large amount of cash. One suspect had more than six hundred thousand shillings in his house.
Forensic teams have also been analyzing bullets found in the MP’s body and at the scene. The gun used in the killing had been linked to earlier armed robberies.
The court has allowed detectives to hold the suspects for thirty days as the investigation continues. More arrests are expected as the probe widens.
