There was drama at a funeral in Mathira on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, when supporters of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua disrupted a speech by area MP Eric Wamumbi.
The MP was addressing mourners at the burial of Anne Wanjiru, the chairlady of a choir formed by Gachagua, when he attacked the former DP, claiming he had not helped the deceased. “Gachagua has not helped this chairlady, and if he has, let him come here and say so,” Wamumbi dared.
His remarks angered a group of youth, who stormed the podium, forcing the MP to cut his speech short and return to his seat. Following the disruption, Wamumbi alleged that Gachagua had sent the supporters to intimidate him, though he provided no evidence to support this claim.
However, Gachagua’s allies, including Kirinyaga Senator Murango James Kamau, blamed Wamumbi for causing the chaos, stating that there had been no politics at the funeral until the MP’s remarks ignited the situation.
