The burial of Cecilia Wanjiku, the Form Four student who lost her life during the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Senior School in Gilgil, Nakuru County, was marked by deep sorrow and emotional scenes that touched many Kenyans.
A photograph of Cecilia’s grieving mother holding tightly onto her daughter’s portrait during the burial ceremony has circulated widely online, leaving many people heartbroken.
The image captured the pain of a mother saying goodbye to a child who was not only bright and hardworking but also remembered as a hero for her courageous actions during the deadly dormitory fire that claimed 16 students’ lives.
Cecilia’s story has continued to inspire many across the country since the tragic incident occurred on May 28. According to accounts from fellow students and family members, the young girl demonstrated remarkable bravery when the fire broke out in one of the school dormitories. Instead of focusing solely on her own safety, Cecilia reportedly helped several students escape from the burning building.
Witnesses said she was among the students who guided others to safety as panic spread through the dormitory.
However, tragedy struck when she attempted to escape the raging inferno herself.
Reports indicate that part of the burning roof structure collapsed and struck her on the head, trapping her and preventing her from reaching safety.

Beyond her heroism, Cecilia was also celebrated for her academic excellence. Faily members revealed that she scored an impressive 399 marks in her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations. Despite facing financial challenges, she remained determined to pursue her education.
After completing primary school, Cecilia joined a local secondary school before later securing an opportunity to study at Utumishi Girls Senior School through the support of well-wishers who recognized her academic potential.
Teachers and relatives described her as disciplined, focused and passionate about science.
Her dream was to build a successful career through education and make a positive impact on society.
