President William Ruto’s personal assistant, Farouk Kibet, has turned his attention to Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, challenging the lawmaker to account for his past decisions on public finances amid his renewed criticism of government spending.

In a pointed message, Kibet questioned Nyoro’s recent remarks on accountability and governance, arguing that his record as the former chairperson of the National Assembly’s Budget and Appropriations Committee should also come under scrutiny.

Kibet revisited the contentious Finance Bill 2024, which sparked nationwide demonstrations and widespread opposition over proposed tax increases. He challenged Nyoro to explain his position during the budget discussions and reconcile his past responsibilities with his current concerns about public expenditure.

The presidential aide also questioned Nyoro’s exchange with National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, asking whether the Kiharu legislator had presented the evidence he reportedly promised Parliament.

Kibet further raised concerns about how public funds were distributed among constituencies, calling for greater clarity on the criteria used to determine allocations and whether regional equity was adequately considered during Nyoro’s tenure.

He extended his criticism to Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), bringing the lawmaker’s reported shareholding in the utility firm into the debate. Kibet challenged Nyoro to address questions about his business interests while speaking publicly about financial accountability.

The remarks have added another dimension to the growing political exchanges surrounding government expenditure, parliamentary oversight and the responsibilities of leaders who have previously held influential positions.

At the centre of Kibet’s message is a demand for consistency, with the presidential aide insisting that public officials should be prepared to explain both their current positions and decisions made while exercising authority.

Nyoro’s response to the questions raised would provide an opportunity to clarify his record and address the issues surrounding his past budgetary responsibilities.
