Fresh controversy has emerged following a visit by William Ruto to the JCM church led by Muthee Kiengei. The development comes after remarks by the mother of Boniface Kariuki, a mask vendor who was reportedly shot by police during protests last year.
Speaking in reaction to the church event, Kariuki’s mother claimed that her late son had never been a member of JCM.“Hakuwa hata anajua kwa Kiengei ni wapi,” she said, suggesting that her son did not know where the church was located. She also expressed dissatisfaction with Bishop Kiengei’s decision to host the president, allegedly citing comments the cleric made during Kariuki’s funeral.
According to the family, they were disappointed by what they described as a change in tone, especially given the public statements reportedly made at the burial regarding justice and accountability. The mother did not provide further details but indicated that the visit had caused emotional distress to the family.
Boniface Kariuki was reportedly shot during demonstrations last year, although official findings surrounding the incident have not been detailed in this account. The case drew public attention at the time, with calls from various quarters for investigations into the circumstances of the shooting.
Neither Bishop Kiengei nor representatives of the church had publicly responded to the mother’s remarks at the time of publication. It is also unclear whether the president addressed the matter during his visit.
